Free camping in Italy is legally a grey area. In the off season it is tolerated by most authorities as long as you behave respectfully and leave no trace. In nature reserves and directly on the beach it is forbidden.
What time of year is best for free camping in Sardinia?
October to April - April in particular is ideal. Few tourists, pleasant daytime temperatures of 17 to 22 degrees, most spots freely available.
Do I need a 4x4 for Sardinia?
Not necessarily. Many great spots are reachable on normal roads. For the truly remote coves and gravel tracks inland, 4WD is an advantage.
What do I do with grey water and toilet waste in the off season?
This is the most critical point. Many disposal stations are closed. A composting toilet is the best solution. Never dispose of grey water into nature - always use open campsites for disposal.
