Nordkapp in winter
When to go
Note on December:
Polar night means zero daylight at Nordkapp. Fascinating, but psychologically and logistically very demanding. For a first winter trip to Nordkapp, February or March is the recommendation.

FAQ
Do I need four-wheel drive?
No – but it makes life considerably easier. Many campervans do the route with standard vans and good winter tyres. On compacted snow, that works well. On black ice, on uncleared campsites or in soft snow off-road, four-wheel drive can be the difference between getting through and getting stuck. If you have a 4WD vehicle, use it.
Can I camp overnight on the Nordkapp plateau?
In winter, no. A clearance rule has been in place for several years – all vehicles must leave by 23:00. The reason: there have been repeated situations where campervans were trapped for days by snowstorms and had to be evacuated. The nearest overnight option is Skarsvåg (12 km) or Hytte Camp Nordkapp.
What happens if the Nordkapp road is closed?
Closures can last hours or several days. Build in at least 2–3 buffer days. Skarsvåg is a good base for waiting it out. The weather at Nordkapp is notorious for rapid changes – the window sometimes opens surprisingly quickly. Check Statens Vegvesen for current information.
