Tools and Apps you need
That said, language skills are definitely an advantage. Along the Pan-American Highway, there are really only two languages you need: English (which almost everyone speaks anyway) and Spanish. You’ll get much further asking for help in Spanish than by simply holding your phone with a translation app in someone’s face. And by the way: don’t be afraid of making mistakes - Latin Americans are incredibly friendly and will do their best to understand even very broken Spanish.
