FAQ
Is wild camping legal in the USA?
Yes, on public land such as BLM areas and in many National Forests, dispersed camping is allowed and usually free. In National Parks, on private land and in many towns it is not.
Can I camp for free in a National Park?
No. In National Parks you may only stay at designated campgrounds or with a permit in the backcountry.
Can I sleep in a Walmart car park?
Sometimes. The decision lies with the store manager and local laws can prohibit it. Always ask first. Cracker Barrel, truck stops and some casinos are alternatives.
Do I need four-wheel drive to camp for free in the USA?
Not always. Many spots can be reached on maintained gravel roads with a normal campervan. For demanding off-road tracks, for example in Utah or Death Valley, you need ground clearance and often four-wheel drive.
