    FAQ

Is wild camping legal on the Isle of Skye for campervans?

Not as a legal right. Scotland’s right to roam covers walkers and tent campers but not motorised vehicles. NatureScot specifically states that free roadside parking and overnight stays are not permitted. Overnight stays in lay-bys in a self-contained vehicle are tolerated in some places but not a right, and many locations on Skye now have explicit “No Overnight Parking” signs.

Where can I park overnight for free on Skye?

Some lay-bys tolerate overnight stays from self-contained campervans - but increasingly these are signed to prohibit it. With StayFree you find community-reviewed spots with current notes on what is and is not working. Always check signage on arrival and have a backup plan.

When is the best time to visit Skye by campervan?

Late September and October - quieter, cheaper campsites, more space, extraordinary autumn light. May and June are also good. July and August are beautiful but busy - book a campsite well in advance.
